mrs-002-hidehira-bowl
Hidehira Bowl — the classic lidded bowl in Hidehira-nuri, with pine, clouds and gold-leaf diamonds

Why this bowl

This is the classic Hidehira bowl from Marusan Shikki, a lidded bowl made for simmered dishes at a kaiseki table and for zoni, the soup that opens the New Year in Japan. The lid keeps the soup warm until everyone is seated, and the size suits an everyday bowl of soup as well. If you'd like the same design with more room, the Hidehira Large Bowl is a size up.

The pattern

Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf and hand-painted motifs over a lacquer ground. This bowl carries the full set of its traditional elements: cloud-shaped panels of reddish-brown lacquer with a bright red edge, a lattice of gold-leaf diamonds laid across them in the yūsoku-hishi pattern of linked diamond shapes, and pine branches painted in red lacquer on the black ground around them. The pine is urushi-e, lacquer painting done with the momentum of a single brushstroke rather than built up in layers, and it takes years to learn. A thin band of gold leaf runs around the rim.

How it is made

The bowl is turned from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut), coated with lacquer, and finished in nuritate: the final coat is left as it comes off the brush, with no polishing afterwards, so the surface has a soft, natural sheen rather than a mirror shine. It deepens with use. The gold leaf goes on while the lacquer beneath is still half dry; too early or too late and it won't hold. A last coat of clear raw lacquer over the gold then keeps it in place.

The workshop

Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. Real gold leaf and natural urushi lacquer are used throughout.

What to know before you buy

As with any urushi lacquerware, wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, start with lukewarm rather than very hot food or drink so the lacquer settles in gradually. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.

Details

Sold as a single bowl with its lid. It measures W128 × D128 × H95 mm, holds about 330 ml, and weighs about 190g. Made to order and shipped from Japan via DHL, with a lead time of approximately two months.

If your table could use one lidded bowl for soups and simmered dishes through the year, you can order it below.
