Why this bowl

This is the larger of Marusan Shikki's Hidehira bowls, made with a matching lid. In Iwate, New Year's zoni soup comes crowded with vegetables, and this bowl holds a full serving with room to spare. It suits simmered dishes and soups all year round, and the lid keeps them warm until everyone is at the table.

The pattern

Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf and hand-painted motifs over a lacquer ground. On this bowl the design is pared back to two elements: cloud-shaped panels of reddish-brown lacquer with a bright red edge, and a lattice of gold-leaf diamonds laid across them in the yūsoku-hishi pattern of linked diamond shapes. The floral painting common to Hidehira-nuri is left out, so the clouds and gold stand quietly against the dark lacquer, under a thin band of gold leaf at the rim.

The workshop

Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. This bowl is turned from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut) with a sturdy wall, then built up by hand through lacquer and gold.

What to know before you buy

As with any urushi lacquerware, wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, start with lukewarm rather than very hot food or drink so the lacquer settles in gradually. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.

Heritage & Credentials

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.

  • In 1985, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry designated Hidehira-nuri itself — not any one workshop or product — a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品).
  • Tradition links its origins to the late Heian period, with accounts describing lacquer artisans from Kyoto working in the Hiraizumi area.
  • Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The traditional specification for Hidehira-nuri begins with hon-kataji, a lacquer ground built up in layers with cloth reinforcement before colour is applied.
