A vessel reserved for tea moments, created for quiet concentration

These natsume are lacquer tea caddies made specifically for use in tea settings.
They are designed to temporarily hold matcha during tea preparation and are not intended for long-term storage of tea leaves or powdered tea.

By being used only within the limited context of a tea gathering, the natsume helps shape the rhythm of movement and the atmosphere of the moment, encouraging calm focus and attentiveness. While the decoration remains restrained, each motif—Kin Ichō (gold ginkgo), Tokusa (horsetail), and Hanamatsu (floral pine)—offers a distinct character, adding a subtle expression to a single bowl of tea.

A dedicated form that supports tea ceremony gestures

The natsume has a two-part structure, divided into lid and body, with an extremely small contact surface between the two.
This delicate construction allows the opening and closing motion to remain quiet and controlled, without interrupting the flow of the tea procedure.

When held, the surface feels soft and balanced, naturally fitting the fingers. As a tool, the natsume does not assert itself; instead, it quietly supports the actions and presence of the tea practitioner.

Handcraft demanding both uniformity and refined decoration

One of the most challenging aspects of making a natsume is achieving an even finish along the joint between lid and body.
Because this contact area is so small, even slight variations in lacquer thickness or distortion directly affect how the lid fits and moves.

In addition, the decorative motifs—Kin Ichō, Tokusa, and Hanamatsu—require careful attention alongside the lacquer work. Balancing a uniform surface with the clarity and restraint of each design demands meticulous handcraft. Each piece is finished individually, with close attention to both function and expression.
