Why this bowl

Some bowls earn their place by doing several jobs well. This one is made for the meals you put together every day. Its shallow, rounded shape is easy to serve from and easy to handle.

The craft

Hidehira-nuri is the lacquer tradition of Hiraizumi, in Iwate. It is characterised by gold and hand-painted motifs set against a dark lacquer ground. This bowl carries that mark: a band of red cloud shapes runs around the black outer wall, with gold diamonds set within it, and the inside is finished in a deep red. It is the same generations-old technique, in a bowl sized for the meals you eat every day.

The workshop

Marusan Shikki has made Hidehira-nuri in Ichinoseki since 1904 and is now in its fifth generation. It is the only Hidehira-nuri workshop that still carries every stage, from wood-turning through to the decoration, under its own roof. Each bowl is shaped by hand, then built up in lacquer entirely by hand.

What to know before you buy

Treat it as you would any urushi lacquerware. Wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and leave the microwave and dishwasher alone. Dry it with a soft cloth, avoid long soaking, and keep it out of direct sunlight so the lacquer keeps its depth.

Heritage & Credentials

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.

  • Designated a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品) by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1985.
  • Traces to the late Heian period, when Fujiwara no Hidehira brought lacquer craftsmen from Kyoto to what is now Iwate.
  • Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
