Why this bowl
This is a soup bowl scaled for a child's hands: 104 mm across, 62 mm tall, and about 160 g. It holds a small serving of miso soup or clear broth, and its low weight makes it easy for young fingers to hold and lift. Sized for small servings and small hands, it is the kind of bowl a child can treat as their own.
The pattern
Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf and hand-painted motifs over a lacquer ground. On this bowl, a small rabbit sits beside a stylized blossom on a strip of green grass, under a fan of scattered gold leaf with a small check of gold diamonds at its edge. The same design appears on both colours, red and black; choose whichever suits your table.
The workshop
Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. This bowl is turned from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut), then built up by hand through lacquer and gold.
What to know before you buy
As with any urushi lacquerware, wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, start with lukewarm rather than very hot food or drink so the lacquer settles in gradually. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.
- In 1985, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry designated Hidehira-nuri itself — not any one workshop or product — a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品).
- Tradition links its origins to the late Heian period, with accounts describing lacquer artisans from Kyoto working in the Hiraizumi area.
- Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- The traditional specification for Hidehira-nuri begins with hon-kataji, a lacquer ground built up in layers with cloth reinforcement before colour is applied.
