Why this pair
These are soup bowls for everyday miso soup rather than special occasions, sold as a pair, one finished in red and one in black. The "meoto" in the name means a married couple, the two bowls that share a table. On each bowl, a round field of gold leaf sits beside the painted motifs, covered by a coat of shuai lacquer, a semi-transparent red-brown finish. The lacquer is at its darkest when the bowls are new, and because lacquer with little pigment turns clearer with time, the gold beneath grows brighter through years of use.
The pattern
Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf and hand-painted motifs over a lacquer ground. Marusan Shikki created the Hanamaru pattern to mark the workshop's 100th anniversary, joining pine, bamboo, and plum, the classic tokens of good fortune, with the chrysanthemum motif that recurs in Hidehira-nuri design.
The workshop
Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. Each bowl is turned from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut), then built up by hand through lacquer and gold.
What to know before you buy
As with any urushi lacquerware, wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, start with lukewarm rather than very hot food or drink so the lacquer settles in gradually. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.
