Built up by hand, coat by coat, until the gold takes hold.
Hidehira-nuri is built in more than a dozen hand-applied layers, each one polished before the next goes on. What begins as raw timber becomes a piece finished in vermillion, black, and gold leaf.
Gold leaf and lacquer, carried forward for some 800 years.
Did you know Hidehira-nuri traces its name to Fujiwara no Hidehira, the 12th-century lord of Hiraizumi? Marusan Shikki still lays the gold leaf by hand, the same way it has been done for generations.

Five Generations in Gold and Lacquer
Marusan Shikki
Founded in 1904 in Ichinoseki, Iwate, now in its fifth generation.
A team of eight craftsmen carries each piece by hand, from raw timber to the final gold leaf.
Their signature palette is vermillion within, black without, and gold leaf laid over both — echoing the golden culture of the Oshu Fujiwara clan.
