Why this pair

These are meoto-wan, a matched pair of soup bowls made for two people at one table. A bowl of soup finds its way to the table most days, and these are sized and shaped for exactly that. The foot ring sits a little higher than usual, giving your fingers an easy hold even when the bowl is warm from the pot. A band of Hidehira-nuri motif in gold leaf runs around the rim, understated enough for daily use.

The pattern

Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate. Gold leaf is traditionally paired there with painted motifs set against a dark lacquer ground. On these bowls, the pattern is simplified into a single decorative band.

The workshop

Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. Each bowl is carved from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut), then built up by hand through lacquer and gold leaf.

What to know before you buy

As with any urushi lacquerware, wash it by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, ease it into hot soup gradually rather than pouring it in straight from the pot. This lets the lacquer settle in well. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.

Heritage & Credentials

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.

  • Designated a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品) by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1985.
  • Traces to the late Heian period, when Fujiwara no Hidehira brought lacquer craftsmen from Kyoto to what is now Iwate.
  • Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Its production method is government-defined down to the base coat, hon-kataji, the most robust of Japan's lacquer primers.
