Five Generations in Gold and Lacquer

Marusan Shikki

Founded in 1904 in Ichinoseki, Iwate, now in its fifth generation.
A team of eight craftsmen carries each piece by hand, from raw timber to the final gold leaf.
Their signature palette is vermillion within, black without, and gold leaf laid over both — echoing the golden culture of the Oshu Fujiwara clan.

An 800-Year Journey

Hidehira Lacquer

The name traces back some 800 years to Fujiwara no Hidehira, the 12th-century lord of Hiraizumi.
Its gold leaf and lacquer echo the golden culture of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, set over motifs of drifting Genji clouds and diamond patterns once worn at court.
Hidehira-nuri is recognized by the Japanese government as a traditional craft.
