Why this vase
Empty or full, this vase always has something in bloom. Its front face carries a rikka motif, a formal, upright style of flower arrangement, painted in red lacquer and set with small diamonds of gold leaf. The piece reads as arranged even before you add a single stem. When you do, a metal liner inside lets you use fresh water without it touching the lacquer.
The pattern
Hidehira-nuri is the lacquer tradition of Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf worked against a lacquer ground. Here the rikka motif is painted in red lacquer with gold-leaf diamonds set into it, so the pattern stays in view long after real flowers would fade, a quiet echo of what the vase is for.
The workshop
Marusan Shikki has worked in lacquer in Ichinoseki since 1904 and is now in its fifth generation. Each vase is made from hoo (Japanese magnolia) and built up in lacquer, in a process the workshop counts at more than fifteen steps, before the gold leaf goes on by hand.
What to know before you buy
As with any urushi lacquerware, this piece is not tableware and needs only dry care. Wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid water and damp cloths, since moisture can work into the wood and loosen the lacquer. Avoid solvents and alcohol-based cleaners too, since they can dissolve the lacquer. Handle it gently, as a hard knock or drop can chip the gold leaf or crack the lacquer underneath. Store away from direct sunlight.

Because the gold leaf is set by hand, no two vases are quite identical. After you're finished using it with fresh flowers, empty the metal liner and let it dry rather than leaving water inside.

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.
- In 1985, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry designated Hidehira-nuri itself — not any one workshop or product — a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品).
- Tradition links its origins to the late Heian period, with accounts describing lacquer artisans from Kyoto working in the Hiraizumi area.
- Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- The traditional specification for Hidehira-nuri begins with hon-kataji, a lacquer ground built up in layers with cloth reinforcement before colour is applied.

This vase has a metal liner inside the wood body, so water never touches the lacquer directly. Its care differs slightly from a bowl or cup.
- If you use it for fresh flowers, change the water in the liner every few days rather than leaving it to sit for weeks.
- After use, empty the liner and let it dry, rather than storing the vase with water left standing inside.
- Wipe the lacquer body with a soft, dry cloth. Skip the dishwasher and microwave.
