Why this tray

A formal tea gathering calls for a tray like this, and so does an ordinary afternoon cup. Set it with dry or fresh wagashi or a few pieces of fruit at the tea table. Its flat surface and low rim make it just as easy to carry as to put away.

The pattern

Its face carries Genji-gumo, a cloud motif drawn from Heian-era scroll painting. It is one of the signature patterns of Hidehira-nuri, the lacquer tradition of Hiraizumi in Iwate. The cloud shapes are laid down in lacquer, and gold leaf is set inside them as small diamonds. The design stays simple enough to suit both a formal tea setting and everyday use.

The workshop

Marusan Shikki is a fifth-generation workshop in Ichinoseki, founded in 1904. The tray starts as a hoo (magnolia) wood base. It is the only Hidehira-nuri workshop that still carries every stage — wood-turning, undercoating, lacquer painting and the final gold leaf — under its own roof.

What to know before you buy

Wipe the tray clean with a soft, damp cloth, and dry it fully after use, rather than washing it like tableware. Avoid abrasive cloths or scouring pads, which can scratch the lacquer and dull the gold leaf. Keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher, and out of direct sunlight, which can fade the lacquer's colour over time.

Heritage & Credentials

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.

Designated a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品) by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1985.
Traces to the late Heian period, when Fujiwara no Hidehira brought lacquer craftsmen from Kyoto to what is now Iwate.
Rooted in the Hiraizumi area of Iwate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is handmade Hidehira-nuri lacquerware. A little care keeps it in daily use for years.

This tray suits dry and lightly moist foods, such as sweets or fruit. Avoid setting very hot dishes or liquids directly on the surface.
Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth, then dry it straight away. For a fuller wash, use lukewarm water with a mild detergent and skip the dishwasher.
Avoid long soaking in water.
Dry with a soft cloth after washing, rather than air-drying.
