Why this pair
These are sake cups sold as a pair, one finished in tame and one in aka. Each holds about 70ml, sized for a single pour rather than a long drink. Two cherry petals sit at the bottom of each bowl, painted in vermilion lacquer and dusted with gold, so they come into view as the cup empties. The foot is wrapped in a band of gold leaf set with a single gold diamond. Set out together, the dark cup and the red one read as a pair without matching exactly.
The pattern
Hidehira-nuri is a lacquer tradition from near Hiraizumi in Iwate, built on gold leaf and hand-painted motifs over a lacquer ground. The cherry blossom is placed where it is seen by the person drinking rather than by the room. The diamond on the foot is one of the recurring motifs of the tradition.
The workshop
Marusan Shikki has worked in Hidehira-nuri since 1904, from a workshop in Ichinoseki now in its fifth generation. Each cup is turned from tochi (Japanese horse chestnut), then built up by hand through lacquer and gold.
What to know before you buy
As with any urushi lacquerware, wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and keep it away from the microwave and dishwasher. For the first two to three months, start with lukewarm rather than very hot food or drink so the lacquer settles in gradually. Dry with a soft cloth, skip long soaking, and store away from direct sunlight.

Hidehira-nuri carries a documented history and an official craft designation.
- In 1985, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry designated Hidehira-nuri itself — not any one workshop or product — a Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品).
- Tradition links its origins to the late Heian period, with accounts describing lacquer artisans from Kyoto working in the Hiraizumi area.
