Heritage & Credentials

Approximately 1,300 Years of History — Joboji lacquerware originated in the Nara period, when monks at Tendai-ji temple in Ninohe, Iwate began lacquering their daily bowls. It is one of the oldest lacquerware traditions in Japan.
Designated Traditional Craft — Joboji-nuri was designated as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Pure Japanese urushi — Urumi Kogei uses 100% domestically harvested urushi lacquer from the Joboji area in Ninohe, Iwate. Iwate Prefecture produces approximately 80% of Japan’s domestic urushi.
Cultural Heritage Restoration — Joboji urushi is used in the restoration of Japan’s most important cultural properties, including Chusonji Konjikido (Golden Hall), Nikko Toshogu, and Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion).
Living National Treasure-level Artisan — Yoshiharu Katsumata, chairman of Urumi Kogei, holds the national “Contemporary Master Craftsman” award (2016) and was decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure (2019).
